Abstract (en)
The subject of the invention is a liquid metal target for a spallation source, consisting of a flow channel (1) in which liquid metal (2) flows at a sufficiently high speed, the flow channel having an opening for the entry of the proton beam (P) and suitable forming of the channel causing deflection of the liquid flow, to produce inertia forces such that an outflow of the liquid metal from the window is prevented. This is achieved in that the inertia forces acting in conjunction with the gravitational forces in the region of the window result in the formation of a free liquid surface (6), detached from the channel wall, which is approximately parallel to the channel wall in which the beam window (opening) is located. This can be implemented, according to the invention, by a curved channel piece with the window arranged in the wall facing the centre point of the curvature, or by constriction of the liquid flow before the window and subsequent expansion after the window. The combination of both methods is also possible according to the invention (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
