[origin: EP0076994A2] In a process for the continuous preparation of hydrocarbon oil from coal by pressure hydrocracking in two stages, ground coal is pasted together with finely dispersed catalysts and with oil mixture in the first stage, the paste and the hydrogen are heated under a pressure from 200 to 700 bar up to 380 to 440 DEG C, pass through one or more reaction chambers and hydrogenated (liquid phase), and the gaseous and liquid reaction products are separated from the solid products in hot separators, passed through one or more reaction chambers provided with fixed-bed hydrogenation catalysts and hydrogenated once more (gas phase). The improvement comprises using the effluent, requiring treatment, from the overall plant as the gasifying agent, for producing the hydrogenation hydrogen, by partial oxidation of coal and/or of coal- and bitumen-containing hydrogenation residue.
