[origin: EP0077077A2] A compact panel-shaped low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp is provided which is suitable for directional illumination in the domestic and working environment. The discharge vessel consists of a shell-shaped upper part (1) having a central socket (7) and a flat closing plate (2), both parts being produced from pressed glass. A wound discharge path (9), which runs in a plane perpendicular to the emission direction, is formed in the upper part (1) by two or more annular separating walls (4a) and a straight separating wall (4b). By appropriate forming and design of the two vessel parts (1, 2), it is achieved that at leat 80% of the generated light flux is emitted via the flat closing plate (2). In one advantageous embodiment, the shell-shaped upper part (1) is provided on its inner side (10) with a relatively thick coating (11) of fluorescent material (more than 6 mg/cm<2>). In the case of a thinner coating thickness of the fluorescent material, an additional reflection coating is applied. The closing plate (2) has a protective coating on its side facing the discharge, if required in conjunction with a thin coating of fluorescent material (1 to 3 mg/cm<2>). <IMAGE>
