[origin: EP0077955A2] The container is intended for the transportation and/or storage of spent nuclear fuel elements, and its receiving opening on the end face is closed by a welded on cover lid (6). In order to enable the weld (8) which is not subjected to any substantial mechanical stresses, to be simply and accurately tested after being welded to the cover lid (6), the container body (4) and the cover lid (6) each have a weld lip (7, 9) which project adjacent to one another beyond the outline of the fuel element container. Stresses emanating from the region of the lid can be absorbed resiliently by the projecting weld lips (7, 9). <IMAGE>
