Refractory lining for liquid metal containers or furnaces, especially for pig iron transfer vessels, such as tube ladles or torpedo ladles, comprising at least in localised regions an expansion gap between the shell or the permanent lining and the jointless laid wearing lining, the expansion gap being filled with a compressible mass containing a granular refractory material, characterized in that the expansion gap is filled with a compressible hydraulically setable backing filling mass blended with water and consisting, relating to the dry mass, of 4 to 20% by weight of expanded perlite, 15 to 25% by weight of aluminous cement, 0.5 to 4% by weight of a plasticizer, the balance to 100% by weight being refractory material.
