The honing tool has honing shells and honing stones mounted thereupon, as well as at least one sensor fastened to a tool support for contactless measurement of the distance from the workpiece surface to be machined. To make the distance measurement more reliable and thereby to make substantially automatic machining possible, the sensor (9) is an inductive measured-value transmitter which is fastened between neighbouring honing shells (2) on the tool support (1). <IMAGE>
