[origin: US4708746A] A method for acid-catalyzed hydrolytic splitting of cellulose to give a high yield in sugar with a minimal expenditure in energy, in particular, with the smallest possible charge of live steam. Admission of steam is performed in a plurality of successive, discrete reaction stages having in each case defined temperature and pressure values in such a manner that the temperature rises from one stage to the next while the reaction time decreases and a rapid expansion takes place subsequently to the last reaction stage. A high pressure poured bed reactor is used for performing this method.

Um bei einem Verfahren und einer Vorrichtung zur säurekatalysierten hydrolytischen Spaltung von Cellulose eine möglichst hohe Ausbeute an Zucker bei minimalem Energieaufwand, insbesondere bei möglichst geringem Einsatz von Frischdampf zu erzielen, wird die Wasserdampfbeaufschlagung in mehreren aufeinanderfolgenden, diskreten Reaktionsstufen mit jeweils definierten Temperatur- und Druckwerten derart vorgenommen daß die Temperatur von einer zur nächsten Stufe steigt, während die Reaktionsdauer abnimmt und erfolgt im Anschluß an die letzte Reaktionsstufe eine schnelle Entspannung. Zur Durchführung dieses Verfahrens wird ein Hochdruck-Schüttbettreaktor herangezogen.
