The resultant dioctyl phenol formed as a by-product is alkylated in a second stage in a further solid-bed reactor with phenol in the presence of an acidic ion exchanger, and water at temperatures of 110 DEG -140 DEG C. and under an excess pressure of up to 5 bar to obtain additional p-tert-octyl phenol.
