Apparatus for grinding the edges of glass sheets (12) by means of a grinding tool (1, 2) mounted on a tool carrier (4) which may be displaced perpendicularly to the edge of the glass sheet and on which a pressing device (6-8) acts whereby the grinding tool is pressed with adjustable force against the edge of the glass sheet, characterized in that the pressing device comprises a constant-torque electric motor (8) which is articulated on the tool carrier (4) by the arm of a crank (7), the pressure exercised by the constant torque motor (8) being transmitted to the tool carrier (4) by a manometric cell (15) the output electric signal from which is fed, as the actual grinding pressure value, to a control amplifier (17) which governs the constant torque motor (8).
