Abstract (en)
Compounds, their salts and esters, of formula (I): <CHEM> wherein R<1> is C1-6 alkyl, C3-8 cycloalkyl, C5-8 cycloalkenyl or an aromatic group; X is oxygen or sulphur; m is zero or one; n is zero, one or two; R<2> is hydrogen, acylamino, ureido, acylureido or guanidino; R<3> is the residue of a beta -lactam containing beta -lactamase inhibitor R<3>CO2H; and R<4> is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon moiety; any of the above groups being optionally substituted; are beta -lactamase inhibitors, and may be prepared by reacting together a source of (a) the side-chain R<1>-(X)m-(CH2)n-CHR<2>-CO-; (b) the 6-aminopenicillanic acid moiety; and (c) the esterifying group -CHR<4>-O-CO-R<3>. The compounds may be used to treat bacterial infections in animals such as those of the respiratory and urinary tracts, of soft tissues, or mastitis in cattle. They may be administered alone or together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier as a pharmaceutical composition.
