Joint covering for expansion joints in carriageways, especially bridges, which lies laterally adjacent to the surface of the carriageway and which has an elastomeric mat (1) which is supported on rigid plates (3) which bridge the joint (2) and are arranged spaced apart in a row in the longitudinal direction of the joint and each of which is rigidly connected to the mat (1) only within a narrow longitudinal portion, characterised in that the mat (1) comprises two parallel strips (4, 5) connected by narrow cross-pieces (9), between which strips the plates (3) are inserted, the upper strip (4) lying flat on the plates (3) and the lower strip (5) lying on the edges (11, 12) of the joint loosely and the plates (3) being secured to the mat (1) by means of the cross-pieces (9).
