A process for opening the launch sabot used for propulsion and guidance of a kinetic energy sub-projectile (1) of the Armor Piercing, Fin Stabilized, Discarding Sabot (AP.FS.DS) type with a sabot (4) comprising several components (4a, 4b, 4c), characterized by the fact that the opening takes place in two main phases : a first phase consisting of the sabot aft section opening through the discarding of the components while the fore section is still locked, and a second phase consisting of the fore section opening after full unlocking of the components, the opening of the aft section being followed up by the separation of the sub-projectile (1) from the sabot fore section.
