[origin: WO8301002A1] Polymeric quaternary ammonium compounds having recurring vinylbenzyl ammonium units. The quaternary ammonium units preferably have 2 alkyl substituents of 1 to 4 carbons and 1 alkyl substituent of 4 to 12 carbons and thus comprise repeat units of the structure <IMAGE> wherein R is a 4 to 12 carbon alkyl, R' and R'' are each 1 to 4 carbon alkyls and X<-> is an anion. These materials have antimicrobial properties and are particularly useful for preserving ophthalmic solutions.
