A hammer the wooden handle of which is fixed to the hammer head by an intermediate one-piece, steel socket and additionally held by safety devices, characterized in that a) the socket (13) consists of a short portion (15) of round cross-section and an elongated portion (16) of oval cross-section and the transition between the portions (15, 16) is formed by a truncated cone (17), b) the socket (13) which receives the single end (18) of the hammer handle (12), can be driven into a bore (14) of the steel-made hammer head (11) such that the portion with the round cross-section (15) of the steel socket (13) is completely placed in the bore (14) and held therein in press-fit position, c) the safety devices are designed as wedges (19) and dowel pins (20).
