[origin: EP0088307A2] 1. A control in a typewriter with a printing mechanism having a total type carrier (3), a character and a function keyboard (1), the keys of which at least in part have a multiple character range, and with code converters (12 to 26), by which there is effected a conversion of the code signals of actuated keys into setting signals for the positioning drive of the typewriter for setting the type carrier (3) and/or print position of a character, wherein pluraity of code converters (12 to 26) is provided, of which each (12 to 26) is assigned to a selected character range of the keyboard (1) and is arranged in its own memory region of a register (11) inside the machine, characterized in that the character range of the keyboard (1) and thus the selection of the code converter (12 to 26) is effected via two selection arrangements (36, 30), of which the whole keyboard (1) can be set to standardised character range of a basic keyboard via one selection arrangement (36) and the character range of the multi-range keys can be adapted to a selectable foreign language via the other selection arrangement (30).
