Automatic gas lighter with a control unit (1), an ignition electrode (26) built into the gas burner and which, together with an adjacently disposed part (7) of the gas burner or a corresponding earth electrode forms a spark gap (8) which is connected in parallel with a secondary winding (4) of an ignition transformer (3), and with a cable connecting the spark gap (8) to the control unit (1), characterised in that the ignition transformer is disposed on the burner, the cable (2) has a plug (5) coupled to an electrical connection of the ignition electrode (6) while the ignition transformer (3) is disposed in the plug of the cable and comprises two mutually concentric windings which are disposed coaxially of a cylindrical part (31) of the plug housing.
