Apparatus for developing punched card microfilms, in which the illuminated film is exposed to a developing fluid in a developer spray pot and is then fixed, characterised in that a radiator (2) emitting radiation which is ineffective in illuminating the film is mounted in the developing area (1) of the developer spray spot (6), and the radiation from the radiator (2) is aimed either directly or indirectly towards a sensor (3) which is arranged in a position of action thereto and which responds to the radiation, the radiator (2) and sensor (3) being arranged so that the radiation is passed to the sensor through a relatively large part of the illuminated area of the film material (4) being developed, whilst the developing process is terminated by means of the output current from the sensor (3) when the film material reaches a given optical density over the abovementioned area.
