Desmodromic valve system for internal combustion engines, in which the valve (7) is both positively opened and closed under the action of at least one cam (3, 4) and having means whereby the valve timing is varied with at least one engine parameter to provide timing which is close to optimum at various speeas, the means whereby the valve timing is achieved can preferably be by means of the cam(s) (3, 4) having variable profiles (25, 26; 27, 28) along their length and means whereby the valve is operated by the particular profiles specifically appropriate for the speed.
