[origin: US4440874A] A catalyst composition well suited for oxidation, reduction and oxidation-reduction reactions comprises a platinum group metal component, an oxide composite, and a refractory metal oxide support. The oxide composite comprises at least one member selected from a first group consisting of iron, cobalt and nickel plus at least one member selected from a second group consisting of alkaline earth metals, aluminum and titanium, with the metals of the oxide composite present in proportions such that the atomic ratio of the total of the member or members of said first group to the member or members of said second group is from 1:1 to 10:1.
