Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0092649A2] The invention relates to a process for depositing powdery material containing graphite and synthetic resin on a carbon electrode with a metallic coating, particularly on a graphite electrode, in which, to save energy and production costs, the application of the powdery material is not carried out from an aqueous suspension on a cold electrode surface with a water-soluble adhesive being mixed for bonding the coating onto the electrode surface, but the dry powder mixture is applied without special adhesive onto the electrode surface, heated at least to the melting temperature of the synthetic resin. The synthetic resin melts on this heated surface and thus acts as an adhesive for the graphite powder, hardens, and thus forms a solid, adhering protective layer, containing graphite, which allows the use of metallic contact jaws for current transmission to the electrode in an arc furnace for steel production, without the contact jaws being welded to the electrode surface.
