[origin: EP0092654A2] For increasing the life of a discharge lamp with heatable electrodes, adequate pre-heating must be provided before ignition of the lamp. In an inverter, the load circuit of which contains the discharge lamp (L) and a series resonant circuit (C23, L7) in a series circuit, adequate pre-heating is achieved according to the invention by temporarily increasing the operating frequency of the inverter. If the switch of the inverter is controlled by a transformer (T8), the primary winding of which is located in the load circuit, this object is achieved in particular by short-circuiting a small additional winding (L85). <IMAGE>
