[origin: US4508390A] The invention concerns an improved machine for making underground galleries. This machine comprises a shield consisting of two mutually movable parts, a forward knife casing 1 supporting on its inside a digging device 3 and a rear assembly skirt 2 acting as a guide means for a thrust ring 10. The knife casing and the assembly skirt are mutually connected by a slack fastening system allowing them to pivot with respect to each other in such a manner that their longitudinal axes form an adjustable angle. The machine of the invention applies to making underground galleries provided with coverings bracing the earth; it makes possible marked curves without the requirement of out-of-path earthworks.

L'invention concerne une machine perfectionnée pour la réalisation de galeries souterraines. Cette machine comprend un bouclier composé de deux parties mobiles l'une par rapport à l'autre, une trousse coupante avant 1 supportant intérieurement un dispositif d'abattage 3 et une jupe d'assemblage arrière 2 servant de guide à un anneau de poussée 10. La trousse coupante et la jupe d'assemblage sont liées entre elles par une fixation flottante qui leur permet de pivoter l'une par rapport à l'autre de façon que leurs axes longitudinaux forment un angle ajustable. La machine conforme à l'invention est applicable pour réaliser des galeries souterraines qui sont équipées d'éléments de revêtement soutenant les terres; elle permet de réaliser des courbes prononcées sans avoir à effectuer des terrassements hors profils.
