The invention is distinguished in that a worm conveyor driven rotationally about a horizontal axis is provided to the side of the first conveying section, which conveyor forms a spiral bearing surface for the containers which extends into the first conveying section, in that the pitch of the spiral bearing surface, and thus the conveying speed of the worm conveyor, increase relative to the end of the worm conveyor facing the star wheel, and in that the speed of rotation of the worm conveyor and also the pitch of the bearing surface are so chosen that the conveying speed of the first conveying section and the conveying speed of the worm conveyor are approximately identical at the transfer region. <IMAGE>
