A plant for tying coils by means of a tying strap slung around the periphery of the coil, consisting of a tying machine (5), which has a track (6) for the tying strap, and a coil car (1), which by means of a drive (16) is movable transversely to the tying direction and carries a coil saddle (7) having passage grooves (8) for receiving the tying strap, characterized in that the coil car (1) is provided with aligning marks (13) in a number which is at least as large as the number in which passage grooves (8) are required, said marks have the same spacing as the passage grooves (8), and means (14) for scanning the aligning marks (13) are associated with the stationary tying machine (5) and arranged to control the drive (16) for the coil car (1).
