1. Press for pressing sleeves, cable shoes or the like, having a pressing member (1) which serves to accommodate an upper tool (2) and on which a cylinder (10) is disposed in which a press plunger (4), serving to accommodate a lower tool (3), is displaceably disposed, and having a control member (5) which is coaxially and displaceably disposed in the press plunger (4), characterised in that the control member (5) is supported against a gear (9) which is connected, at one end, to the press plunger (4) and, at the other end, to the cylinder (10) and, when the press plunger (4) moves in the working direction, said gear moves the control member (5) at a fraction of the speed of the press plunger (4) ; in that a locking device (15) is connected to the press plunger (4) and, when the lower tool (3) is in contact with the workpiece (22, 23) to be pressed, said locking device connects the control member (5) to the press plunger (4) in such a manner that the control member (5) moves at the same speed as the press plunger (4), and in that a blocking device (6) is disposed on the control member (5) and, when the press plunger (4) is in a predetermined position, said blocking device blocks the flow of pressure medium to the working chamber (24) of the cylinder (10).
