A lifting and tilting apparatus for refuse bins which are substantially rectangular in cross-section and have a large volume and consists each of a bin tub, which is adapted to be closed by a hinged cover, which is adapted to be closed by a hinged cover, which apparatus comprises a shaft, which is rotatable by drive means and is provided with means for picking up and fixing the refuse bins, and a control device, which is disposed adjacent to the pour-in opening and consists of levers and links and serves to open the lid as the refuse bin is tilted and is provided with hooks, which when the refuse bin has been tilted through about 90 degrees hook into the abutment for the lid and as the refuse bin is tilted further over its opening open the lid to an angle which increases with the tilting angle of the refuse bin, characterized in that the hook (16) is provided at the free bottom end of a lever (9), which is substantially vertical when in position of rest and adjacent to its top end is pivoted by two spaced apart articulated joints (10, 11) to the top ends of two links (7, 8), the lower ends of which are movably mounted in the frame at spaced apart locations (Figures 1 to 3).
