[origin: US4449306A] An otherwise conventionally constructed running shoe sole is provided with a rounded border having a radius of curvature of about 20 mm only along approximately the rear 50% of the length of the outer side of the midsole and heel edge layers, the remaining border area being provided with a conventional flaring or the like with the exception of a transition zone. In accordance with a modified embodiment, a convexly curved shock-absorber bar is incorporated into the sole and is outwardly covered by a layer of softer material which is provided with the outer curvature, and which increases the cushioning capacity of the sole during initial heel strike.
