Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0110080A1] A process for packaging three-dimensional articles, for example a spherical chocolate, involves preforming packaging material, eg. aluminium foil, into an open-topped receptacle, so that the article can subsequently be introduced into this receptacle, after which the receptacle merely has to be closed in order to envelope the article completely. The apparatus for carrying out the process incorporates a forming die (52) which is moved into a forming space over which a blank of packaging material is laid. During the preforming of the blank, the blank is retained centrally, so that it can be preformed substantially symmetrically. Preforming prevents the packaging material from being damaged by the article to be packaged. The apparatus further includes packaging material supply and cutting devices (D1, D2), a device (F) for introducing articles into the formed receptacles, a device (G) for checking the presence of articles in the receptacles and ejecting empty receptacles, a closing device (h) and a device (I) for transferring the enveloped articles onto a conveyor belt of a secondary packaging line. On this secondary line the articles are deposited in respective cup- shaped receptacles to the bottoms of which a spot of glue has been applied for securing the enveloped articles therein. <IMAGE>
