Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0111282A1] 1. An electrical cigar lighter for motor vehicles comprising a metal socket (10) fixable to the instrument panel or a like support of the vehicle, comprising a heater plug (18) composed essentially of a metal sleeve (20) and a part which is insertable into the sleeve and slidable therein against the force of resilient means and has at its frontal end arranged inside the metal socket a hot-plate with an electrical resistance (38) contained in a metal electrical connection cap (34), which resistance, when the heater plug (18) is inserted into the socket (10), faces towards the end of the socket (10), as well as comprising a bi-metal contact element (70) arranged in such a way as to be insulated from the socket and provided with an external electrical connection member and operable to establish, through the can (34), an electrical connection to the resistance (38) when the heater plug (18) has been inserted into the socket (10) against the force of resilient means, characterized in that, between the cap (34) and the bi-metal contact element (70), a resilient element (72) is arranged in an insulated manner in the socket (10), the said element being engageable by the cap (34) when the heater plug (18) is inserted into the sleeve (20) and being resiliently deformable by the cap (34) and, finally, moving into engagement with the bi-metal contact element (70), with the heat produced by the electrical resistance (38) and caused in the bi-metal contact element (70) by the Joule effect bringing about deformation of the bi-metal contact element (70) as soon as a predetermined temperature of the bi-metal contact element (70) is exceeded, the deformation thereof disengaging it from the resilient element (72) and interrupting the supply or current to the electrical resistance (38).
