An arrangement for controlling the brightness of a low-pressure discharge lamp (1) comprising two heatable electrodes (11, 12) connected to secondary windings (42, 43) of a heater transformer (4), and comprising a control device (3) supplied by the a.c. voltage network to provide an adjustable output voltage connected via a series reactor (2) between the electrodes (11, 12) of the discharge lamp (1), characterised by an additional device (6) which supplies a higher-frequency, fundamentally-constant auxiliary voltage permanently connected between the electrodes (11, 12) of the discharge lamp.
