A folding step for rail vehicles, more especially high-speed passenger-train coaches, with a treadbord (32) which is extendable beyond the profile of the vehicle and a step-recess cover (6) which is connected thereto in a movement-terminating manner and which can be swung downwards into the step recess about an axis of rotation (18) which is arranged in the region of the floor-step edge, the treadboard in its retracted state being arranged underneath the step-recess cover in the swivel region thereof, characterized in that the treadbord (32) is independent of the outer wall (34) of the vehicle, the swivel region (A) of the step-recess cover (6) lies inside the step recess (step box 10), and the outer termination of the step recess is formed by the lower part of the door (16) of the vehicle.
