[origin: EP0119545A2] In the reading device in accordance with the invention, a fixed, insulating sensor disc 2 is arranged parallel to each digit drum 1. The sensor disc 2 has a number of capacitors 3 corresponding to the number of digits and arranged with the same spacing as the digits. Each capacitor consists of two metal coatings on the sensor disc 2, which are insulated from each other, one of which is connected to a pulse generator 6 and the other to a detector circuit 4. Each digit drum has an electrically conducting region 1c with a width of a maximum of one digit spacing. If this electrically conducting region 1c is positioned over a capacitor 3 of the sensor disc, the capacitor's capacitance will be significantly increased. From the amplitude of the pulses transmitted through the capacitors 3, it is therefore possible to determine the count status of the digit drum 1, without contact and without application of force. <IMAGE>
