[origin: US4585936A] The coin rolls on a track of triangular section with a vertical side and an oblique side, in which it penetrates as a function of its thickness. The difference in time between the beginnings (or ends) of occultation of the upper cells determines the mean speed and from the duration of this occultation is deduced the length of the chord (PQ) at the upper level (Y-Y'). Knowing the mean speed, the cell of the second level (Z-Z') makes it possible to determine the corresponding chord (RS). From (PQ) and (RS) are deduced the heights (h1, h2) above the plane of roll (X-X') and the diameter and thickness of the coin may then be calculated. More simply, (PQ) and (RS) may be compared electronically with recorded values to reject the coin or accept it and possibly record its value.

La pièce de monnaie (1) roule sur une piste (6-7) à profil triangulaire avec un flanc droit et un flanc oblique, dans laquelle elle s'enfonce en fonction de son épaisseur. La différence de temps entre les débuts (ou fins) d'occultation des cellules supérieures (3a, 3b) détermine la vitesse moyenne et de la durée de cette occultation l'on déduit la longueur de la corde (PQ) au niveau supérieur (Y-Y'). Connaissant la vitesse moyenne, la cellule (3c) du second niveau (Z-Z') permet de déterminer la corde correspondante (RS). De (PQ) et (RS) on déduit les hauteurs (h1, h2) au-dessus du plan de roulement (X-X') et l'on peut alors calculer le diamètre et l'épaisseur de la pièce. Plus simplement on peut comparer électroniquement (PQ) et (RS) à des valeurs enregistrées pour rejeter (1) ou l'accepter et éventuellement enregistrer sa valeur.
