A try square consisting of a guide bar (14), a ruler (12) fastened at one end thereof and extending at right angles therewith and a resting tongue (38) placed in a chamber of the guide bar (14) when not in use, whereby the chamber is provided with an opening at one longitudinal edge (24) of the guide bar, the opening extending substantially along the lenght of the chamber, the resting tongue (38) being mounted for swinging out through the opening about a swinging axis (42) of the guide bar (14) into a position for use characterized in that the front side opening of the chamber is arranged at the rulesided inner longitudinal edge (24) of the guide bar (14) and that the swinging axis (42) of the resting tongue (38) is positioned in the neighbourhood of the ruler (12) more closely to the inner longitudinal edge (24) of the guide bar (14) than to the outer longitudinal edge thereof.
