Device for limiting the downward travel of a lift for personnel or loads having a limiter wheel (3) which is driven in accordance with the lift-cage speed and which, via a curve or cam (path) (8), actuates a pendulum (5) which, in the case of excessive rotary speed of the limiter wheel, swings so far out that it locks the limiter wheel and thereby an arresting device for the lift-cage is released, a device (14) being provided by means of which, in the case of stoppage of the lift-cage and/or inspection of the installation, the limiter wheel (3) and/or a cable (4) lying on the limiter wheel can be locked, characterised in that, during travel, the device (14) can be switched on and off as desired from a remote position by means of an, especially electrical, control line.
