Abstract (en)

An environmental control system for use by severely physically disabled persons has a suck or blow pneumatic input switch device (12) connected through a junction box (23) to a microprocessor-based control unit (11) which controls, in response to operation of the input switch device (12), an indicator (13) with a white lamp (24) and a red lamp (25) in each of fourteen squares, each except the first indicating the operating or non-operating state of a controlled device, the controlled devices being a door catch release (14), an alarm bell (15), external and internal intercom units (16) and (17), a mains appliance switching unit (18), a loudspeaking telephone (19) and a master speaker (22). The intercom units (16) and (17) and the speaker (22) form a controlled two-way intercom system. Controlled devices can be selected for turning on or off by stopping successive illumination of the white lamps (24) in a sequential scan at the chosen square whereupon the red lamp (25) is turned on or off to indicate activation or de-activation. Some of the squares serve also for entering telephone subscriber number digits into a RAM store for automatic display with or without dialling out from the telephone (19). The control signals to the indicator (13) are transmitted by a one-way single-line UART channel from the control unit (11) through a junction box (23). Relay controlled mains switches in the unit (18) are controlled directly from the circuit of the indicator (13).
