Mortise espagnolette lock for windows, doors and the like, comprising a case (2) in two parts (5, 6) joining in a longitudinal plane (7) of the espagnolette and being supported one against the other, said case (2) presenting an interbedded rear part (11) the configuration of which permits it to pierce the subframe of the opening frontally and fit into it ; a headpiece (4) fixed rigidly on the front (3) of the case (2) intended to cover a longitudinal groove cut in the edge of the opening ; two locking rods (29, 30) moving in this groove and situated approximately at a tangent to the body (15) of a door-knob hole (14) and in prolongation of one another ; a door-knob hole (14) housed in the case (2) and activated by an outside operating gear, the body (15) of which is provided on its outside circumference (24) with teeth (27, 28) cooperating directly or indirectly with the extremities (31, 32) of the locking rods (29, 30) and converting the rotation of at least a quarter of a turn of the door-knob hole (14) into a simultaneous translation of equal travel but in opposite directions of each of the two locking rods (29, 30) characterized by the fact that, in combination, the teeth (27, 28) of the door-knob hole have a thickness (23) extending over the greater part of the breadth of the case (2), the walls (8, 9) of which are sufficiently thick to serve as bearings to the shaft (16) of the door-knob hole (14) ; the extremity (31) of the first locking rod (29) comprises a toothing (35) tangential to the body (15) of the door-knob hole (14), meshing directly with the other part (41) of the thickness of the teeth (27, 28) of the door-knob hole (14) and the extremity (32) of the second locking rod (30) intersecting with the extremity (31) and comprising a toothing (36) tangential with the outside circumference (24) of the door-knob hole (14) and meshing with the other part (41) of the thickness of the teeth (27, 28) of the door-knob hole (14) by means of at least one reverseing pinion (45) placed between the door-knob hole (14) and the extremity (32) of the second locking rod (30) inside the longitudinal groove in which the case (2) and the locking rods (29, 30) are placed.
