A winding device for filamentary material wherein a winding drum (3) is mounted to rotate on a fixed housing part (1), has an annular projection (5), projecting from a side wall (4) adjacent to the fixed housing part (1) and is coupled to a return spring (6) that can be tensioned on drawing off the material, said device also having as a braking element a loop spring (7) that is in braking engagement with the winding drum (3), is fixed at one end (8) to the fixed housing part (1) and whose other end (10) can be rotated by an operating member (12) pivotable about the axis of the winding drum so as to release the braking action, characterized in that the loop spring (7) is arranged on the outer circumference of the annular projection (5) and has an internal diameter slightly less than the external diameter of the annular projection (5), in that as an operating member a separate disc (12) is arranged to rotate one the housing part (1), said disc having a hollow collar (14) which engages over the loop spring (7) with a small amount of radial play (15) and being rotatable by means of a plunger (13) displaceably arranged on the housing part so as to increase the diameter of the loop spring (7).
