Rescue appliance for persons in danger at locations remote from the ground, comprising a rescue container (1), of which the peripheral confines incorporate at least one passage (8, 8') which can be opened to allow persons to be transferred from the place they are staying (19) to the rescue container (1) and to leave the latter and then closed so that the persons can be transported, and comprising a fixing device (14) for a load cable (17) by which the rescue appliance can be attached to a helicopter and also comprising a holding device (11-13) for holding the rescue appliance in a position in which the rescue container (1) is alongside the location (19) so that with no notable difference in heights, the persons can climb into the rescue container (1), characterised in that for rescuing passengers from stationary mobile units of a suspended cable railway, the appliance has, constituting the holding device, a supporting device (11-13), which serves for attachment of the rescue container (1) to the supporting cable (15) or to the mobile unit (19) thereof and which by lowering of the rescue appliance can be supported on the supporting cable (15) of the suspended cable railway or on the mobile unit thereof and, in the supported condition, detached by lifting the rescue appliance and being spaced apart from the bottom (2) of the rescue container (1) by an amount which is so dimensioned or which is so adjustable that the rescue appliance supported on the mobile unit or on the supporting cable (15) in a position immediately adjacent the mobile unit makes it possible for passengers to be transferred without any notable difference in heights.
