[origin: US4537158A] Apparatus for cooling an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle is provided having a thermostatic valve for controlling the coolant flow and having at least one fan associated with the radiator. The fan (or fans) can be operated in several output stages and the thermostatic valve can be adjusted to at least two different opening temperatures. When the thermostatic valve is adjusted to a higher opening temperature, operation of the fan in the output stage associated with a lower coolant temperature is blocked.

Bei einer Vorrichtung zum Kühlen eines Verbrennungsmotors eines Kraftfahrzeuges, die ein dem Kühlmittelfluß steuerndes Thermostatventil und wenigstens einen einem Kühler zugeordneten und in mehreren Leistungsstufen betreibbaren Lüfter enthält, wird vorgesehen, daß das Thermostatventil auf wenigstens zwei unterschiedliche Öffnungstemperaturen einstellbar ist, und daß mit einem Verstellen des Thermostatventils auf eine höhere Öffnungstemperatur das Einschalten des Lüfters auf die einer niedrigen Kühlmitteltemperatur zugeordnete Leistungsstufe gesperrt ist.
