[origin: EP0130665A1] A device for rescuing personnel from water comprising a crane (2, 74) positioned on a boat (1, 30) or other rescue structure and including a horizontally and vertically movable crane boom (32, 93). An elongated member (10, 43) is vertically movable with respect to the crane boom (32, 82), and a float (15, 40) is positionned beneath the elongated member (10, 43) for floating on the water. A net (13, 45) extends below the float (15, 40), and means (22, 44) are provided for supporting the net from the elongated member. The boom (32, 82) and the elongated member (10, 43) are connected to each other by means of a universal joint. The elongated member (10, 43) can move vertically in this universal joint and can be locked by means of a brake system (62). A rotary actuator system (80) can give a rotary motion to the elongated member (10, 43).
