Horizontally overlying edges (13) of garments extending outside a putting-up table are gripped by gripping bars (27) of a gripping appliance (21) which, by a 90 DEG rotation, brings said edges (13) within the reach of the transport device (36) of the sewing machine (34) so as to sew zippers onto said edges (13).
