[origin: EP0135819A2] The printing carrier is firstly dampened on its surface to be printed on, then subjected to an intermediate drying process controlling a given degree of damping in a drier, the drying capacity of which is controlled as a function of a measured moisture content in the printing carrier, and subsequently printed on. For the apparatus for printing on a printing carrier according to this process, a damping unit is provided which is connected upstream of at least one printing unit printing on the printing carrier in the direction of movement of the printing carrier.
