The backrest consists of a frame (10) equipped with clamps (11) making it possible to fix this frame (10) removably on the stretcher (B), of a headrest (12) articulated at (15) on the frame (10) in such a way as to be able to pivot about a transverse axis relative to the stretcher (B), and of a device (16, 17, 18) which makes it possible to modify the inclination of the headrest (12) and to fix it in the chosen position. <IMAGE>
