[origin: WO8403577A1] The device comprises a two-dimensional display panel (20) composed of interchangeable modular units (24). Each modular unit is composed of display elements which are nematic or smectic LCD cells. Half-tones and gray-scale tones may be produced by either changing the contrast of the LCD elements or in subdividing each display element into several smaller cells (28, 30, and 32) which are independently switchable to light or dark conditions to provide gray-scale effects in each element. The device can be used to display either fixed or changing images.
