Abstract (en)
With reference to Figure 1, a barrel-type compression-ignition engine 1 has double-ended pistons 10 reciprocally movable in cylinders 2 disposed in a ring around a central axis 3. The pistons 10 are interconnected with a central drive rotary drive member 16, by means of a cam 17 carried by the drive member 16, whereby reciprocatory movement of the pistons 10 cause the drive member 16 to rotate. Upper and lower cylinder cover plates 18 are integral with the drive member 16 so as to rotate therewith in a plane substantially normal to the path of piston movement. Fuel injectors 65 (shown in upper plate 18 only) introduce a metered supply of fuel into the cylinders 2 as the cover plates 18 traverse the cylinder ends. Air inlet ports 81 are formed in the cylinder cover plates 18. When aligned with the ends of the cylinders 2, the ports 81 allow atmospheric combustion air to flow into the cylinders.
