An automatic door closer including a closer shaft (12) biassed by a spring arrangement (34) in a closing sense, and which guides the movable piston (14) of a hydraulic piston-cylinder unit serving for damping purposes, whose high-pressure chamber (20) is connected with the low-pressure chamber on the one hand via a return flow passage having a restrictor and on the other hand via a check valve (18) opening towards the high-pressure chamber (20), characterized in that the piston (14) and the spring arrangement (34) have connected therebetween a self-moving support member (33) adapted to be driven by external energy in the sense of a spring bias as controlled in dependence on the door actuation.
