[origin: US4607860A] In a folding wheelchair for the handicapped which includes a seat mounted on a lower frame provided with casters, the seat is supported on a pair of hinged rear struts which are lockable in an upright position and a pair of front links which are hinged to the front edge of the seat and pivotally connected to the lower frame at an intermediate location essentially along an axis extending laterally below the center of the seat. At its rear end, the seat carries a laterally disposed roller adapted to roll on a support structure against which the wheelchair is backed so that the seat is movable backwardly from its front end position by pivoting the front links backwardly to a rear end position while the seat, rolling with its rear lateral roller on said support structure follows, with its front end, the arc defined by the pair of front links which provides for lowest seat locations at the seat's front and rear end positions so that the seat, by its own weight and the weight of any person thereon, automatically moves toward one or the other of its end positions. The seat includes a frame member and a center portion which is pivotally supported at the front of said frame member so as to be capable of being pivoted down before the seat is moved back onto said support structure.

Unter den beengten Platzverhältnissen von Fahrzeugen werden besondere Rollstühle für Behinderte benötigt, insbesondere um diesen Behinderten die Toilettenbenutzung zu ermöglichen. Derartige Rollstühle müssen leicht sein, um das Totgewicht möglichst wenig zu erhöhen, müssen zusammenlegbar sein, damit sie möglichst wenig Raum beanspruchen und müssen leicht und einfach, sowohl durch das Bedienungspersonal, wie auch durch den Behinderten bedienbar sein. Erreicht wird dies nach der Erfindung dadurch, daß die Sitzplatte eines derartigen Rollstuhles auf, gelenkig an einer Bodengruppe angebrachten, Streben angeordnet ist, wobei das vordere Strebenpaar als Schwenkstrebe ausgebildet ist, die das Vor- und Zurückgleiten der Sitzplatte, das bei der Toilettenbenutzung notwendig ist, auf einfachste Weise ermöglichen. Gleichzeitig wird dadurch erreicht, daß das in derartigen Rollstühlen vorgesehene abklappbare Sitzmittelteil automatisch beim Zurückfahren der Sitzplatte abgeklappt und bei ihrem Vorfahren wieder in die vorherige Stellung verbracht wird.
