A sliding window or door assembly, comprising an outer frame having a fixed pane and a juxtaposed opening to be closed by a sliding window or sliding door, as well as sliding guides (1) provided at the upper and lower sides of said outer frame and extending along said opening and said fixed pane, allowing to slide an inner sliding window or sliding door frame before or behind said fixed pane, said inner frame being provided, at its upper and lower sides, with at least two guide elements (2, 3) engaging the corresponding guides, said elements each being mounted on an arm (6) which is rotatably connected to said inner frame and is movable transversely between two terminal positions in respect of said outer frame, for allowing the inner frame to be shifted transversely in respect of said guides if it is situated within the circumference of said opening, this in such a manner that said inner frame, in one terminal position of said arms, is situated substantially in the plane of said fixed pane, and, in the other terminal position is slidable parallel to and along said pane, said arms being adapted to be actuated by a handle (19) mounted on said inner frame and by driving rods (15, 16, 17, 19) connected thereto, characterised in that said swivel arms (6) are each provided with a toothed segment or pinion (9) arranged substantially coaxially with a pivot pin (10) supported in said inner frame, said segment or pinion engaging a rack (12) which is slidable in the longitudinal direction of said inner frame, and is coupled with a corresponding driving rod (15).
