[origin: EP0146779A2] An apparatus having a device (17, 18) which is controlled by a microcomputer (10) and which acts on the internal combustion engine so as to change the speed. Together with the internal combustion engine and the device (17, 18), the microcomputer (10) forms a control loop and calculates, as a function of actual value speed signals in a first program section, a speed value by summing the applied actual value speed signals. In a second program section, it uses the speed value determined in a specified fixed time to calculate new control signals which are then delivered after completion of the second program section. In microcomputers without interrupt or relatively slow processing time, this ensures a rapid completion of the signal processing and signal emission with the best possible utilisation of the available computing speed. <IMAGE>
